Aus etwa zeitgenΓΆssischen Quellen ist ΓΌber Swithhelms Herkunft nur bekannt, dass sein Vater Seaxbald hieΓ.cite-ref-he3-27-1-0[1] Nachdem sein Brudercite-ref-2[2] KΓΆnig Sigeberht II., dem eine zu christenfreundliche Politik vorgeworfen wurde, von Verwandten ermordet worden war, bestieg Swithhelm den Thron von Essex.cite-ref-he3-22-3-0[3] Sein Bruder Swithfrith war zeitweise Mitregent.cite-ref-fmg-4-0[4]
Swithhelm trat allerdings auf Initiative des KΓΆnigs Γthelwald von East Anglia selbst zum Christentum ΓΌber.
